DESCRIPTION: A wonderful gall found in clusters primarily in the flowerheads of the host plant. Starting greenish-yellow and eventually turning bright purplish-red to brown each gall is up to 5mm in diameter and contains a single orange larvae of the causal midge. Larvae leave the gall and pupate in the soil. DISTRIBUTION: Primarily coastal and found in more southerly areas from late summer to autumn. HABITAT: On the developing fruits or within the stalks of individual flower of Wild Carrot, Wild Parsnip and Burnet Saxifrage.
